I'd question the blanket statement that balsa isn't used on performance race boats. They tend to use a mix of materials to best need the core requirements of particular areas. For example the maxi trimaran Sodebo uses balsa in some areas.

btw in durakore the balsa is oriented with the endgrain between the outside veneers not long grain.

All the balsa cores that I have seen are end grain. Has to be that way to get the properties correct.
