Hey Mick,
Fantastic job!

It would be interesting to know how you've built the rudder shaft in carbon, how many layers of carbon/eglass, and how you got it perfectly round. Did you vacuumbag it?

I'm narrowing down my options for a cat build and keep coming back to the SP 480, sit a fair bit away from deciding and starting. How did you find the kit, is it an acceptable quality or did you find any quality issues? How is the support from Spirited?

Hi Jev

We hand laid up the shafts with 450gsm carbon uni and Kinetix High Mod resin (super fast hardner). We laid them up using a wooden curtain rail as the center as it was nice and straight and about the right diamater.

Uni was in 300mm wide strips. We rolled them at an angel so the strands spiral about 20 degrees. Did a few wraps one direction then a few the other. All up it is about 22 layers thick. Last layer is straight. Need to do it in stages so you dont get too much heat build up. Final OD is approx 65mm. We did not vacume bag, just rolled it real tight on a table. 1 layer of DB E Glass over the carbon so no carbon/stainless steel contact.

I like the bearing system. Making the shafts was quite fun but a bit of work. Probably best of just buying some carbon tube.

Ill post a pic of the finished rudders in the next update I do.

Yeah I'm still happy with my design choice. Been 5 years since we commited to this design and still haven't seen a design I would rather have over all. Thast says it all for me really. Kit went together well, no quality issues, spirited designs have helped whenever needed no worries.

Thank's for the info and images, very helpful.
How much do you expect to be saving in weight by using carbon shafts as opposed to stainless steel?

Oh no clue Jev. Didn't work it out. Wouldn't be heaps I dont reckon unless you used solid stainless as I made mine pretty strong. But if I float the rudder in the pool as they are now they float less than half way up the blade. So get about 15kg of buoyancy force from each rudder.
