caravan windows??

Post by terryk » Wed Jun 25, 2008 11:48 pm

Hi builders, has any ever given thought to using caravan windows for the front turret area and there sliding windows for the cockpit area. There are several companies advertising products which ssem ideal, with prices and sizes etc. I don`t know about their structural properties but they are double glassed UV resistant come with screens etc. this site lists caravan and marine.

caravan windows??

Guys, I will have a sliding hatch over my helm position through the cabin roof extension that covers the cockpit so that I can stand on my helm seat to get a better look at all 4 corners of the boat when docking and just generally keeping watch underway. I got a price on a sliding lewmar hatch at the boat show, about $1400. So I got the idea that a car sunroof is all I need and I found these.

The opening is not a large but it is large enough to stand in so it is good enough for me and at the $65 delivered....no brainer.

Terryk

We did have a look at these very closely and mainly for glass-weight reasons steered away from them. It was a case of find the exact size window/frame to fit or build our own from scratch. Obviously, if we were cashed up, it would be buying the marine types, but this was a choice that we did not have. We also wanted three large windows, full size which added that extra complication (size as well as the slight turret arc that we had). For the helm station, we nearly went with a caravan type, but again chose to make the windows suit the aft angles and now have the option of sliding or totally removable panes. The ‘removable-panes’ was due to the fact that 99% of windows can only be slid ½ open (unless the pane slides down behind the helm wheel) and we were after maximum airflow given the heat buildup in the tropics.

Its never too late to retro fit Sean, perhaps when you turn the power fishing cat into a sailing cat. At $65 delivered I bought 2 and will fit one each side, they arrived today (next day delivery from Brisbane!!) and I am stoked. They are plenty big enough to stand up through and will work a treat.

Hi Guys,

We used 2 caravan sliding windows, water tight, black frames, tinted glass, screened for our cockpit wall, after 3 years they are great and look a treat. TheGerman guy Peter uses Adolf was too expensive for us. These cost $450 pair??

Thanks Crasara, I am a fair way off needing the windows but I like to preplan and buy ahead. I will go back and look at the caravan windows for the helm area, happy cruzin :D
