Alternator regulator

Post by Trev » Thu Feb 23, 2012 3:53 pm

Hi
Can anybody tell me if I will need 2 alternator regulators if I have 2 alternators (1 on each engine)? or can the 1 reg be used to control both? I believe I will have to use a external regulator to achieve a higher charging voltage if I want to use lithium batteries? and would anybody have any recommendations on brands of regulators etc?

Don't want a high voltage for LiFePo's. 13.8V is perfect. Don't want multistage chargers just the fixed voltage.

The regulators on the engines should be sufficient. There used to be issues with connecting two older style outboards to the same battery bank in that when they were both running one outboard regulator "saw" the higher voltage of the other engine alternator and therefore didn't charge, but the newer versions don't seem to have this problem (not sure why!).

Thats good news I thought I would need a complicated/expensive voltage regulators and would need to use Lithium batteries for the starting batteries, etc, to keep things simple, but it sounds as though lead acid and lithium charge about the same??

1 more point on the regulator, Some of the newer types set the voltage to about 14.4 which is not the best for LiFePo's, The older regs were set to 13.8 so get an old alt from a wrecker if u have a new type

Alternately, connect the motors to a small lead/acid 'starting' battery, and then connect that to the house Lithiums via a DC-DC converter, set at 13.8v.
