Airlie Beach Race Week 2012

Post by Smooth Cruiser » Fri Jun 01, 2012 11:00 am

Unfortunately the Whitsunday Multihull Rendezvous, which I have participated in several times over the years, is not running this year due to time constraints of the club committee. However to accommodate us multi owners who are cruising up the coast and want to have a few hot(ish) laps of a race circuit along the way, the Airlie Beach Race Week committee have opened up two multihull divisions, OMR and PHS.

I am cruising up the coast in a weeks time and will be taking part in the ABRW in August, and may also continue on to do the Magnetic Island Race Week in September. Both are great low key events in PHS which offer the opportunity for cruisers or cruiser/racers to experience a racing regatta with a full fleet, race starts and finishes and a high paced social calendar in great locations with top people. As an added bonus this year in the OMR division will be two Orma 60's - Team Australia and Vodafone which should make a fantastic spectacle.

I managed to feature in a promotional article:

How are you adjusting to life in the fast lane (on a Schionning 8-) ) Smooth? I am sure it would be interesting to both Schionning builders and Easy builder here. I am sure there are pros and cons for each design. For example, does the Easy feel stiffer or more substantial than the Schionning? I was on Terry's build the other day and noticed how much stiffer his floor felt to mine, mine still has a bit of a spring to it under foot.

Hi Alasdair
Great to hear and hope that the 'test-runs' are similar if not better than previous. We are heading that way in late October so may catch with you along the coast somewhere...I've always been one step behind. Go get em Moggy :D

Mc Moggy is sitting 1st for the series at this stage after 2 wins and 5 days of incredible sailing. I have been accused of having a "Watermelon Grin" - ear to ear. 18.5 knots under kite today was special but every day so far has been fantastic!

One day to go - everything is crossed!

After a great week and fantastic regatta with some of the best sailing days that the Whitsundays offers up - Mc Moggy took out first place overall in Performance Multihulls division.

To say I am happy is an understatement! We had some fantastic sails and, other than losing a spinnaker halyard just as we did the final kite drop, we had no breakages for the week - always good!

Now to relax with a few weeks cruising before the Magnetic Island Race Week!

We look forward to the updates, any more photos?

Don't want to steal this thread, but if you find any good anchorages, can you send some feedback, either on the Forum or via email. Many more whales?
